((Reading is a
showdown with death, an attempt to cheat it. By doing so, a man – that kind of
flowing creature – protrudes beyond the boundaries of time. Through reading, one
can cure his soul or become a
‘sophisticated fugitive’ (after Nietzsche) that briefly lets himself become
someone else. While reading the late authors or about the past things, one
becomes a resurrector (as Michelet said)
who brings back to life the voices of those long gone. By reading, one becomes
a savior (after Agamben) who shields
his life from the mundane routine and fills the present with sense and depth.
Through reading, one becomes (omni)scient.
Is this not a man’s attempt to become godlike?))
